Today was Sprout’s first Farmers Market visit. I wish I could tell you that it was exciting for her, but, alas, at 93 F outside she was knocked out the whole time in the shade of her stroller. I, on the other hand, was excited to be out. Although pickings were a bit slim (I miss Washington State farmers markets and our organic farmer), I was able to score a few good thing: bell peppers, blueberries, New Zealand spinach, chard, zucchini, Asian cucumbers and basil.
When I got home it was only right to whip up something good from these ingredients. With temperatures climbing into 103’s F today, a cold drink sounded good, so I made a spinach green smoothie.
New Zealand Spinach Green Smoothie
yields 50 oz.
If you have never seen NZ spinach before, here is what it looks like:

Ingredients
- 2 cups almond milk (or other plant milk)
- 1 container blueberries (about 1/2 lb–see image)
- 1/4 cup hemp seeds
- 1/4 cup sesame seeds (great source of iron)
- HUGE handful of NZ spinach
- 2 oranges, peeled
- dates or honey for sweetness, if needed
Blend in a high speed blender until smooth and enjoy!
